Is every picture worth a thousand words?
How often do you look for a caption underneath a photograph? Or, how often do you comprehend a photograph without a caption? A caption, also known as a cut line, is text that appears below an image.
It is widely accepted that not every image needs a caption; some images are simply decorative. A very few may be genuinely self-explanatory. Also, you may think that a truly good photograph needs no caption at all. And I’m sure a case could be made that some pictures are actually weakened by captions or explanations. By captioning a photograph, the true essence of the photograph will be lost. The mystery attached to the photograph will be disturbed and the joy of thinking will be restricted.
Typically, a viewer will look first at the photograph. If it’s not interesting, that will be just a glance and move on, so the caption doesn’t even come into play. However, if your image passed the first hurdle, which was to spark an interest in the viewer, then they will go to the caption to find out something about it. If the caption takes them a step further and encourages more interest, they’ll go back to the photograph to look at it more carefully.
